River Report.

FLOOD REPORT

A miserable day to be out, incessant rain with some real downpours and a constant southwesterly wind just to make it even more unpleasant. These two photographs were taken earlier today. Safe to say the Barrow is in good winter flood. I have seen it much higher over the years but having said that its still rising. Many sections of towpath are submerged with heavy flow and now rendered dangerous. The river has burst its banks in many locations and a number of the local roads are flooded. The forecast is not looking great. Still raining with more to come. Time for another stick on the fire.

The Barrow today, south of Carlow Town.

Levels just keep going up. There was a fair spill of rain over the last few days and it would be fair to say the river is up 3 to 4 feet at least and pushing hard. I checked it twice today at 6 hour intervals and there was no increase in the level, however it has broken its banks in a number of places. Maybe it will start to drop in the next 24 hours, this coupled a rain free forecast for the next few days may help to bring things back to norm'

Finally some rain!
Thursday 4pm
The river is up a good 4 inches and rising. Theres not much more rain forecast but I will check again tomorrow. There is a little more colour than normal but water clarity still remains reasonable. Flow in the main channels has not changed.

Monday 8th Oct. 3.30pm

The rain which has fallen over on and off over the last 24hrs has made little impact on the river level. Its up a couple of inches at the most -still remaining  very low. Flow in the main channels is slow to medium and visibility is still good.
I'm fishing tomorrow so it will be interesting  see if there's much change.

Thursday Sept 27th at 18:30

After the previous rise (see last post) the river is now on the drop. It has dropped 2 inches in the last 24 hours. Colour has reduced somewhat too, visibility to a couple of feet, medium to strong flow in the main channels.

In my (non expert) opinion the river is currently 13 to 19 inches above its minimum average summer levels, a good 2 to 3 feet below flood.

Wednesday Sept 26 at 15:30

The river has risen quickly in the last 48hrs. Its is now 14 inches higher than last week when it reached a "real" summer low (see some previous posts for reference). It is not in flood however it is very coloured, quite opaque, water visibility is poor.
The river is pushing through there is no froth or surface debris.

As a part of the blog I've decided to include regular water level updates. This over a peroid of time I hope will build a better picture of the river and how it changes with the weather and seasons.

These reports may assist anglers in making a decision as to when might be the most suitable time to be at the river and as to the type of conditions to expect when they get there.

Nothing worse than getting to the river to find it out of sorts or even unfishable especially after a long pre dawn drive.

Please note that these will be "River" reports not "Fishing" reports. I will make observations on each visit to the river, noting the level, the amount of change in the level, the colour, flow and any other notes which may be of intertest. I will record the time and date of each report however there can be sudden changes in any system.

By doing this anglers will be able to couple this information with latest weather forecasts and can therefore make a more up to date and informed decision as to the viability of a session on the bank.
